Aunque estos productos siguen dejando mucho que desear. No es en vano que varias autoridades en temas de salud internacional, incluso el Ministerio de Salud, se hayan ensañado en pedir investigaciones científicas sobre los efectos del cigarrillo electrónico. La lista de peticiones va desde universidades médicas suecas, informes de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y no hay que irse tan lejos, el Instituto de Evaluación Tecnológica de Salud (IETS).
Las conclusiones, aunque prematuras, apuntan a que no hay mucha diferencia entre consumir cigarrillos electrónicos y consumir tabaco. ¿Por qué? Primero porque investigaciones europeas han señalado que los líquidos que contienen los electrónicos -a vapor- pueden causar alergias o síntomas de asma o dificultades para respirar, como lo aseguró un estudio del Instituto Karolinska éste año. De hecho, se ha dicho que la nicotina que tienen podrían aumentar el riesgo de ataques cardíacos o accidentes cerebrovasculares. Y el resultado de la revisión hecha por el IETS indicó que “no hay diferencias significativas” en la efectividad de vapear, porque el consumidor no abandona el hábito de fumar finalmente.
El impacto de esto, se espera, ayude a combatir los daños que causa el tabaco en el mundo. Entre ellos, la muerte de más de 7 millones de personas cada año, de las cuales alrededor de 890.000 son fumadores pasivos según la OMS. La otra cara de la moneda será si los consumidores podrán sustituir sus gustos por los cigarrillos electrónicos y sin humo, ya que casi el 80% de los más de mil millones de fumadores que hay en el mundo viven en países de ingresos bajos o medios, sostiene la misma organización internacional de salud.
